Technical Support Note
======================
Reference TSN No. : NA
Product(s) involve : All Sound Blaster cards
Third party product(s) : DR DOS 5.0 / DR DOS 6.0
Subject
-------
"BLASTER" environment string not found (or similar messages) when booting
up or running Sound Blaster programs or application.
Description
-----------
User may encounter the above mentioned problem when booting up the system
or attempting to execute any Sound Blaster application using DR DOS 5.00 or
DR DOS 6.00. For example, SBP-SET or SBCONFIG /S command. This
problem persists even though the BLASTER environment is displayed by typing
the SET command at the DOS prompt. The cause of this problem is because
some drivers/TSRs/programs are being loaded into high or upper memory block
using the HILOAD command before the Sound Blaster SET environment and
programs. This prevents the Sound Blaster programs from accessing the
environment settings.
Solution/Action
---------------
This problem can be solved by any of the following solutions:
a. Move all the Sound Blaster SET environment and programs (eg. SBP-
SET.EXE or SBCONFIG.EXE /S) to the top of AUTOEXEC.BAT before
any other programs.
b. Do not HILOAD any TSR/driver/program before executing the Sound
Blaster SET environment and programs (eg. HILOAD TSR/driver/program
only after the Sound Blaster SET environment and programs).
c. Insert a "MEMMAX -U" command to disable access to Upper Memory
before executing the Sound Blaster SET environment and programs.
